Memorial Day is a reminder of the debt we owe to those who gave all…. something we should ponder more than once a year. The families I came to know while writing this article years ago touched me deeply and I think of them often. Some of the family members who participated are no long with us. But I remain grateful for their allowing me a little time to listen to their stories, to acknowledge both their love and pain, and to fully understand how the fallen are so much more than a face on a wall, ink on paper, framed and frozen, never to age. Each was an integral piece of a family, ripped away, leaving the remainder broken in a way that is irreparable. These families move on and learn to smile again but they are never fully restored. So remember them along with the fallen. The fallen rest in peace. The families endure. Please provide them with support whenever you can.
